Checkpoint Systems is proud to support Silpo, the Ukrainian grocery retailer that has been recognised as one of the top 10 most effective European brands by the 2021 Effie Index, and for its innovative store designs by European Supermarket Magazine.

Silpo, part of Fozzy Group, is famous for its themed design concepts and experiences the chain creates for its guests. It currently operates 295 supermarkets and four Le Silpo gourmet stores across Ukraine. And, despite the Russian invasion, it continues to expand with new stores launched in 2022. This includes the recent launch of a Japanese Zen Garden, and a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-2-themed supermarket co-created with the world-famous video game developer.

Identifying and ranking the most effective agencies, marketers, and brands by analysing credited finalist and winner data from worldwide Effie competitions, Silpo was recognised as a top 10 brand in Europe in the 2021 Effie Index. It is the only Ukrainian brand that was included in the European Index. In 2021, the chain received seven Effie Award Ukraine trophies. Among them, the Gold in PR and Corporate Reputation category for the creation of a new sweet bun devoted to a young customer born on the day predicted by a Silpo receipt. Another campaign took the Gold Timely Opportunity when Silpo declared its love for its competitors on billboards facing its competitors stores. The campaign resulted in 46% increase in sales during the holiday season and a 494% Return on Marketing Investment (ROMI)[1].

Silpo was also recognized in European Supermarket Magazine’s Finest Stores line-up for the sixth year running. ESM’s Finest Stores line-up recognises the most impressive and innovative store design concepts across Europe. This year, it featured three Silpo outlets, all of which opened last year, including:

  • Silpo Dieselpunk, which opened in May 2021 in Kharkiv, designed around a retro-futurist Dieselpunk aesthetic.
  • Silpo Kabuki Theatre opened in 2021 in Uman. Designed to evoke kabuki, the traditional Japanese dance-theatre famed for its stylized performances, glamorous costumes, and elaborate Kumadori make-up
  • Silpo Brazil in Kyiv, dedicated to Brazil. Opened in November last year and is Silpo’s largest outlet.

Checkpoint works with its authorized partner Bizerba Ukraine as part of a strategic partnership with Silpo to provide anti-theft and loss prevention solutions in its stores.

Checkpoint Systems’ David Perez, EMEA Channel & Portugal Business Unit Managing Director, said of Checkpoint’s ongoing partnership: “Silpo is a remarkable company, driven by a desire to engage shoppers with eye-catching, innovative designs very rarely seen in supermarket outlets. It’s this design that helps each themed outlet to maximize potential through increased footfall and decreased shrinkage even in adverse circumstances.

“Checkpoint’s technology, that can be placed further apart to be visually less intrusive, is the perfect choice to blend in with such innovative store designs, while still offering great protection, even in stores with wider aisles,” he added.

Says Kateryna Oguriaieva, Marketing Director of Silpo: “Checkpoint’s technology works perfectly with our vision for our stores, offering greater loss protection and a sleek design that doesn’t detract from our store themes. Keeping our stores open with good availability is always important, but even more so at the moment; it’s technology such as that from Checkpoint that helps us to do this.”
