Senior Engineer - MV & ALS Consumables - Thorofare N.J. - REQ# 8UAKVM

The Senior Engineer – MV & ALS Consumables is responsible for providing the technical and project leadership for the design engineering of consumable products for both the Merchandise Visibility (RFID) and Apparel Labeling Solutions business units. This also includes the bridging and production scale up of product designs to manufacturing to achieve product cost and quality targets. This includes projects in the 850 – 950 MHz / RFID frequency range to create a manufacturable product through the concurrent engineering process adhering to established project schedules and budgets.

Main Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Participation in detailed analysis and design to meet product and manufacturing performance specifications and requirements, documentation package and manufacturing / validation test processes.
  • Frequently acts as R&D project lead on major projects following a stage gate development process.
  • Capable of managing product developments and transitions to remote manufacturing sites which include both Checkpoint internal and third party external operations.
  • Design and development of final tag and label antenna qualification and validation tools (Total system including hardware, software, and label fixturing) for performance validation for design and mass production of RFID designs, prototypes, and final products.
  • Design of consumable Gen 2 RFID inlays, labels, specialty apparel tags (Hang tags, woven pocket labels) and reusable hard tag products.
  • With little supervision, works creatively and independently to establish objectives, meet deadlines, and complete difficult engineering assignments by demonstrating full competency in one or more engineering areas; planning the technical and key functional aspects of projects, as well as design, testing / validation, and use of major system components.
  • Input to the Business Strategy will include technical solutions demonstrating the understanding of Checkpoint’s company strategy.
  • Interacts with technical and manufacturing staff colleagues to foster research ideas, develop and hone research/experimental skills
  • Mentoring leadership to engineering associates.
  • Independently or in a team develops a complete product or system. Leads, by example, the deployment of solution development and innovation processes. 

Minimum Requirements: Education & Experience  

  • University degree in Engineering required, typically a BS, MS (preferred) in mechanical or manufacturing engineering
  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience.
  • Experience designing consumable label and tag products that contain RFID elements.

Knowledge & Skills:  

  • Sufficient technical knowledge to function independently or in a team.
  • Must possess the ability to apply product development, project management, and manufacturing engineering toward practical tag/label products in a concurrent engineering environment.
  • Acquired knowledge of Gen 2 protocol RFID chips and their functionality and performance.
  • Solid understanding of pressure sensitive label and apparel hang tag design, materials of construction, and process methods of manufacturing.
  • Strong project management skills including manufacturing engineering experience in roll to roll web conversion processes. Ability to develop products that can be scaled to “Billions” per year in manufacturing units that achieve product cost and quality targets.
  • Must be an innovative thinker that can bring and implement new solutions and ideas to Checkpoint
  • Systems design experience
  • Fluent in MS office
  • Must have good communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Interacts easily within the technical community.
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 30%
  • Work environment: Office /Laboratory/ Manufacturing Environment.
